The Buffer

Lesson 3 of 3

Where to keep it

A buffer has two rules that pull against each other: you must be able to reach it when real trouble hits — but it must not be so easy to reach that it leaks into everyday spending.

  • Keep it separate from your daily money. If your buffer sits in your main MoMo right next to your spending cash, you will borrow from it for a night out and call it an emergency. Out of sight, out of temptation.

  • Give it a name and a target — like Emergency Buffer: 600,000 — so you know when it is full and can stop, and so it feels real.

  • Refill it after you use it. Spending your buffer on a true emergency is not failure — that is it doing its job. Just top it back up afterwards.

A named, separate buffer is the most calming thing you can do with money. You stop lying awake about the next bad week, because you have already beaten it in advance. In Mizani, create a Goal called Emergency Buffer, set your target, and let every deposit shrink the gap.
