Can I own a house on a 450,000 salary?

Lesson 2 of 9

Rent is the silent killer

Rent feels normal, so we never count it. Let us count it.

Say you pay 150,000 a month for a single room. That is 1,800,000 a year. Over 10 years — 18,000,000 — and at the end you own nothing. Not a single brick. The landlord owns a house; you funded it.

Rent is not evil — everyone starts there. But it is a leak the size of a river (you met leaks in Find the Leaks). Every month it quietly drains your money into someone else's asset.

The trick is not to stop renting tomorrow — you cannot. The trick is to treat your future house as a second rent you pay to yourself. Even if all you can redirect is 90,000 a month toward land and materials while you rent, you have turned part of that river toward your own ground.

The real question is not 'can I afford to build?' It is 'can I afford to keep paying rent forever and own nothing?'

Keep going — and make it count
