"I should save more" never happens — it is too vague for your brain to grab. "I am saving 300,000 for a laptop by December, that is 25,000 a month" — that happens. A goal that sticks has three parts:
An amount — exactly how much (300,000)
A date — by when (December)
A rhythm — how much each week or month gets you there (25,000 a month)
Then make the gap visible. We are wired to chase a number we can watch shrink — it is the same buzz as watching the score climb in a game. When you can see 120,000 of 300,000 filling up, you do not want to break the run.
One warning: we all believe things will be cheaper and faster than they really are — it is called the planning fallacy. That trip, that gadget, that event always costs more than you guessed. So set your target a little higher than feels comfortable. Future-you will be glad you padded it.
