The Time Machine

Lesson 1 of 3

The trick that makes one shilling huge

Imagine a rich uncle gives you a choice. Option A: he puts 10,000,000 in your hand right now. Option B: he gives you one shilling today, but promises to double it every day for 30 days — 1 becomes 2, 2 becomes 4, 4 becomes 8, and so on.

Which do you take? Almost everyone grabs the 10 million. They lose. Watch what the single shilling does:

  • Day 1: 1

  • Day 7: 64

  • Day 14: 8,192

  • Day 21: just over 1,000,000

  • Day 30: more than 500,000,000

By the last day that one shilling has become over 500 million — fifty times the 10 million you almost grabbed. That is the power of doubling.

What is really happening?

Your money earns a little. Then those earnings start earning too. Then everything earns. It is like one hen: she lays eggs, the eggs become hens, those hens lay more eggs — soon a whole poultry farm grew from one bird.

Real savings do not double every day; nobody pays that. But the engine is the same: every shilling you keep and let grow starts pulling in more shillings of its own. And notice the list above — nothing exciting happens for the first 20 days. The magic is all at the end. Saving feels slow and boring at first, then one day it is not. Most people quit before the magic arrives. Do not be most people.

Keep going — and make it count
